Science Centre Kenya is the first of its kind in Kenya.  The initiative aims to demystify science and make it fascinating by explaining daily scientific occurrences in a way that people and specifically students and children can fully comprehend and apply in their daily lives. Young people account for a disproportionately large percentage of the population in Kenya and therefore represent an important and dynamic force in Kenyan society. Of 47 million Kenyans, 50% are under 18 years old. In contrast, the median age in the U.S. is 37, or twice that of Kenya.

Youth in Kenya face many challenges, including high rates of unemployment, illiteracy, lack of essential services, and lack of access to information. This situation creates diminished hope for the future, along with high rates of unemployment and crime, particularly amoung youth.

One proven solution is to invest in education that builds the capacity of Kenyan youth. Science Centre Kenya (SCK) is a pilot STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) centre, based at KALRO (Kenya Agricultural & Livestock Organization) in Nairobi, dedicated to youth capacity building, with the

MISSION:

“To promote science, technology, and innovation through interactive science experiences that engage, challenge, and inspire exploration and understanding of the world around us.”

VISION:

“A brighter future for Kenya’s youth through STEM.”

The main objective of the centre is to promote science technology and innovation through interactive science experiences. This objective is achieved through the use of exhibitions, science shows and through supporting science education across both formal and informal situations. In addition, the center aims to;

  • Facilitate more public engagement

  • promote greater comprehension of science

  • Increase general appreciation of the fruits of science

  • Improve youth appetite to study science
